Naomi Van Zandt '25 earned her 4th WCAL title and the SHC Wrestling program qualified almost every varsity wrestler for the postseason at the 2025 WCAL Championship Wrestling Tournament this past Saturday.
The Irish sent 12 Varsity boys to the WCAL tournament and advanced all 12 wrestlers to next weekend's CCS North Regional Championship. On the girls side, the Irish advanced four out of six competitors along with one alternate.
Van Zandt, committed to Brown for rugby, set a school record by winning her 4th straight WCAL championship, this time at 170.
Zelia Curtiss '25 was a finalist for the second straight year at 112,
Luke Chommanard '25 and
Ronin Innes '26 were league finalists at 122 and 134, respectively, and
Jared Perez '25, Lazaro Ruiz, Jr. '26,
Lizzie Ogden '26,
YahShuah Tuliao '27,
Inary Macias-Mendoza '27, and
Paco Luzardo '25 all battled back for Bronze.
At the lower levels,
Jaiden Fong '25 dominated his opponents to win the 2nd Man bracket, and
Ray Grant '27 took home gold in the JV 146 pound bracket.
Dylan Russo '26 was a league finalist at 167, Freshman
Kian Leon Guerrero '28 earned bronze at the JV 128 pound division, while Aiden Ignacio '28 and
Landon Russo '28 took 2nd and 3rd in their Frosh brackets.
Coach Woods was pleased with the team's efforts but isn't celebrating yet. "Seventeen wrestlers moving on to the postseason is a school record! I am proud of all our Fightin' Irish Wrestlers for their hard work this season, but the job's not finished."
The CCS qualifiers will compete in the North Regional tournament next Saturday, February 15, at Gunn HS, and the top competitors will advance to the CCS Masters on February 22 with the hopes of qualifying for the State Tournament in Bakersfield.
Congratulations and Go Irish!
