On Thursday December 5, Sacred Heart Cathedral wrestling officially started their 2024-25 SHC season. The Fightin 'Irish opened their mats to Archbishop Riordan, Lowell, and George Washington for The City Double Duals. Starting strong for the Irish, Ronin Innes '26, Gabriel Ochoa-Bermudez '27, Roman Maimone '26, and Francisco (Paco) Luzardo '25 attained four consecutive pins against Washington High School. All bouts were very exciting and showed the importance of experience in grueling competition and high pressure situations. By the end of the sequence, the Irish beat out the Eagles, winning with a team score of 60-6.
Later that same night, SHC faced off against the Lowell Cardinals. Both sides fielded skilled performances. Rookie Inary Macia-Mendoza '27 fought hard in her debut performance for the Irish and showed promise and talent for the upcoming season. Battling hard, the Irish girls varsity team fell to an experienced Lowell squad. The Irish boys varsity answered with an exciting win over Lowell's boys 36 to 27. Securing the victory was senior Paco Luzardo '26 coming from behind to pin his opponent in the final round of the bout.
All in all, the Fightin' Irish Wrestling had a tremendous night. Their showing was a glimpse of what the rest of the season has to hold for these dedicated athletes.
Congratulations and GO IRISH!
