The Sacred Heart Cathedral Track & Field team traveled to Gilroy on Saturday for the CCS Trials, performed very well, and came away with a new theme to carry through the postseason, "Embrace the Energy Tour".
"I feel like we're a rock band that's been going from meet to meet to perform," said Head Coach Andy Chan, "so I dubbed this the Embrace the Energy Tour." The tour started when the team travelled to Los Angeles in April, with several team members competing at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational and others at the Tiger Invitational. School records were set at both of these meets and then it was on to WCAL Trials and WCAL Finals.
At CCS Trials on Saturday, SHC had athletes competing in 13 events and came away with nine qualifying performances. "CCS Trials is not easy. We've established a reputation because of our success the past three years. And with that come expectations and some pressure. That's why I am impressed that we came away with nine Q's (qualifying performances), including five out of the six relays," said Chan.
The five relay teams are all returning to the CCS Finals for the second year in a row. The Girls 4X100 Relay ran 48.89 to place 6
th. The Girls 4X800 Relay team ran 9:50.52 to place 10
th and the Boys 4X800 Relay team ran 8:09.10 to place 6
th. In the 4X400 Relay, the Girls (2023 State Meet qualifiers) placed 3
rd in 3:59.81 and the Boys (2024 State Meet qualifiers) placed 5
th in 3:26.34.
Miles Cook, who placed 3
rd to qualify for State last year, was the second fastest time qualifier in the 1600 meters at 4:15.46.
O'Bryan Flanigan won his heat in the 100 with the third fastest time of the day (10.84) to qualify for CCS Finals.
Freshman
Ava Lindner placed 5th in 56.70 to qualify for the final in the 400. And
Jasaun Mabrey placed 2
nd in the Triple Jump (45-5) to earn his second consecutive CCS Finals qualification. The 2025 CCS Finals will be the third straight CCS Finals for Cook, Vivi Colwick,
Tessa Wehrle and
Izzy Guzman.
The CCS Finals will take place May 24 back at Gilroy HS, where Chan hopes "the Embrace the Energy Tour will resume." This date is also the day of SHC Graduation for the Class of 2025. "We've been on and off talking about this day for almost a year," said Coach Chan, "The seniors will graduate in the morning, then we're getting on a bus to go down to Gilroy in the afternoon. We're going to fight to get some PR's and a chance to go to State. It's going to be one of the best days of my life!"
Congratulations, best of luck, and GO IRISH!!
