The Sacred Heart Cathedral Track & Field team picked up more than 70 medals at the Flying Knights Relays on Saturday, March 8, at Hillsdale High School.
"You better use two hands when you carry this bag," said assistant coach Michael Chasse, as he placed the medals into Coach Andy Chan's wagon after the meet.
The Irish took 1st place in six track race relay races (F/S Girls 4X800, 4X100, and Sprint Medley Relay (SMR); Varsity Boys 4X100, SMR; Varsity Girls SMR). They also took 1st place in two field event relays (Varsity Girls Shot Put, Long Jump).Â
Individually, the Irish took gold in five track events: Giovanni Ponce Escobar '28 in the F/S Boys Mile, Annabel Chung '28 in the F/S Girls Mile, Beya Maxfield '28 in the F/S Girls 100, Katelin Lee '28 in the F/S Girls 100H, and O'Bryan Flanigan '25 in the Varsity Boys 100. Also taking 1st place in the field events individually were Kelly Hom '25 in the Varsity Girls Shot Put and Jasaun Mabrey in the Varsity Boys Long Jump.Â
The Irish were a dominant presence overall at the meet. In 13 out of 16 track relay races, SHC placed in the top 3. In 17 out of 18 individual events, SHC had at least one person earn a podium spot (top 3 finish).
In addition the Irish achieved times to enter for the prestigious Arcadia Invitational next month in the Boys 4X100 (43.07)Â and Girls Sprint Medley Relay (1:51.02).
The Irish will compete next at the St. Francis Invitational on Saturday, March 15. Note: The previously scheduled meet at Washington High School for March 12 has been cancelled.
