It has been a tremendous season for Sacred Heart Cathedral's track and field program as they head to Gilroy for the Central Coast Section finals this Saturday, May 18.
Twenty-three athletes will make the trip south, hoping to qualify for the 2024 CIF State Track and Field Championships in Clovis.Â
The Irish will be well represented throughout the meet, with athletes in seven events, beginning with the girls' 4x100m relay. Tessa Wehrle, Katherine Borek, Vivi Colwick, and Tati Petkovic are the four vying for the state meet slot. The girls must go under 48.11 or finish in the top three to qualify.
Two individual events are on the docket for the Irish, including the boys' 1600m, where Miles Cook will look to make the state meet after a season of being one of the top 1600m runners in the CCS. Cook has run below the 4:13.24 time standard a couple of times already this season and seems to have a real shot at making it to Clovis.
The boys' 400m run will include Ryan Joyce in what could be the final race of his high school career. Joyce would need a personal best of 48.50 to advance to the state meet.
Both girls' and boys' 4x800 meter relay teams made it to the CCS Finals, with the girls seeded 5th and the boys seeded 3rd. West Lenart, Cam Gregg, Luke Moore, and Cook make up the boys' team, while the girls' team will be made up of Maya Pfalzer, Bridget Panina, Isabel Merriman, and JoJo Gregg. The event is new to high school track and field meaning there is not time qualification standard. They must finish in the top two for either team to move on.
SHC will also be involved in the final two races on the track on Saturday evening when both 4x400 meter relays go off. The girls' team includes Wehrle, Kanoe Palmer, Borek, and Colwick as the anchors. Wehrle, Borek, and Colwick are seeking a repeat state meet berth after making it a year ago. On the boys' side, Shiv Mohan will lead off, followed by a yet-to-be-decided runner, then Cory Wong and Joyce to close out the meet.
It will be an exciting day for the Irish, who have been building to this day since the beginning of the season. Multiple athletes have a chance to qualify for state, which would make it back-to-back years of Sacred Heart Cathedral competing at California's highest track and field meet.
