At the CCS Top 8 Invitational on Friday April 21, 2023, senior
Isaiah Keishk '23 broke the twenty-eight year old school record in the 100 meters. Keishk ran 10.70 second to win the second heat and place sixth overall. The time currently ranks him seventh in CCS and first in the WCAL in the 100 meters for the 2023 season.
The previous school record was held by Christon Rance '96, who ran 10.83 seconds at CCS Finals and the State Meet Trials in 1995 as a junior. Rance still holds the SHC school records in the 200 meters (21.73) and long jump (23'1.75"). Rance just returned to SHC this school year as a Social Studies and English teacher as well as a football coach.
In addition to being a school record holder and WCAL champion (100, 200, and long jump) in track & field, Rance was a star on the football field as a running back, safety and kick returner. He would go on to earn a football scholarship to Arizona State University, where he played safety. In 2001, he played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys. Rance was recently inducted into the SHC Athletic Hall of Fame.
Keishk, like Rance, is also a football player, and as a wide receiver, was a key contributor in Sacred Heart Cathedral's 2021 State Championship team.
Below are a few Q&A's with Keishk.
What was your goal for the 100 meter race at CCS Top 8?
I felt I was going to break the record that day because I was feeling good but I only expected a 10.81 or something. So when I got 10.70 it was like, "Wow, I did not know I was that fast."
What do you remember about the race?
I remember talking with the people I was competing against and just trying to not get too nervous. In the blocks your heart starts beating faster than ever, but I just calmed down and focused on my start. I did not expect to win the race, but it was in the back of my mind. When the gun fired, my start was amazing, and I was ahead of everyone. I just focused, stayed calm, and tried to keep the lead. And that ended up being the case.
What did you think when you saw your time was 10.70?
Not going to lie, I did not think I got anything close to that. When I saw the reactions from my teammate,
Ryan Joyce '24, and Coach Chan, I was like, "Oh it must be a P.R. for sure." When I saw the clock and it read 10.70, I was so shocked and proud. I knew I broke the record and I just felt blessed.
What have you been most proud of so far?
I have been most proud of my constant progress throughout the season because I did not know I was this fast. Even through lots of small injuries this season, I have still found a way to get better and faster and just impress myself and others every meet. I've been proud that the work that I put in is paying off, my speed is getting better, and I have an opportunity to show it to the world.
Can you share a favorite memory besides the 100 meter record from this season?
I ran the 200 meters at Bellarmine in pitch dark. I had a mind blowing, 22.7; that impressed me and everyone else. Because 200m is a long race and for a football player, I expected only a 23. But after the race I just felt a drowning amount of love and support from my teammates that made me appreciate everyone so much more. I try to be a good teammate and it felt good to just see and feel my team so supportive of me.
