With fog rolling in like the tide over Kezar Stadium, SHC took on the Chargers from Wilcox High School on Friday night. The Irish won the coin toss and drove down the field toward Wilcox's endzone to start the game. After Michael Sargent threw a beautiful spiral that gained nearly 30 yards for the Irish, things looked good for SHC. However, Wilcox intercepted a subsequent Sargent pass and scored a touchdown on their ensuing drive. The Irish missed on their best scoring chance of the game, and despite scoring two touchdowns later in the contest, the Chargers gave SHC its first loss of the season, 39-14.
Wilcox missed the extra point following its opening score, and the game would remain at 6-0 through the end of the first quarter. After two more touchdowns by the Chargers, the Irish marched the ball down the field for a touchdown right before the end of the first half. The score as both teams left the field for halftime was 19-7, Wilcox.
The Chargers got the ball at the start of the third quarter, but SHC's defense stood firm, forcing them to punt. After several back-and-forth possessions, Sargent let one rip for 24-yards downfield to Jasaun Mabrey, who ran it in for an SHC touchdown. The Chargers had two more scoring drives at the end of the third quarter, but the rest of the second half wrapped up with both teams unable to do much more.
Head coach Antoine Evans noted after the game that, while the team is looking strong overall, "We came out flat. We just need to prepare better."
The Irish will try to recover from this loss and return even stronger when they take on the Archbishop Riordan Crusaders on Saturday, September 28 at Riordan.
