The Sacred Heart Cathedral football program is back in action tonight, ready to kick off West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) play when the Irish face Bellarmine at San Jose City College on Friday night.
SHC (2-1) comes into league play following three non-conference games against Sacred Heart Prep, Berkeley High School, and Folsom High School. The Irish looked sharp in their first two outings, defeating SHP by 25 points before routing Berkeley, 55-3.
The team's early success has come despite adversity at quarterback. Senior starter Michael Sargent '26 went down with an injury, but Jayden Crane '27 has stepped into the role with confidence. Against Berkeley, Crane threw for 282 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.
The Week 3 matchup against Folsom provided a tough test. Facing one of Northern California's premier programs, the Irish fell short but showed grit. Crane capped the game with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Chase Jenkins '27, who finished with five catches for 107 yards.
Last week, the Irish had a bye, using that valuable practice time to "clean things up". Head coach Antoine Evans said the team is feeling good with Bellarmine on the horizon. "When we started this process, this season," Evans said, "I was hoping we were going to be 3-1 in the first four games."
With the prowess SHC has shown in their previous matchups, that goal might be achieved under the Friday night lights of San Jose City College.
GO IRISH!
