Sacred Heart Cathedral is proud to announce the appointment of Andrew Kochevar as the new Head Boys Basketball Coach. Kochevar comes to SHC from San Francisco State University where he has served as the Head Assistant for the Gators since 2023.
Kochevar was the Head Assistant at the College of San Mateo (CSM) during the 2021-22 season, where he played a key role in helping the Bulldogs to a 20-9 record and a CCCAA postseason berth.
Before coaching at CSM, Kochevar was an assistant at Cañada College in Redwood City. Kochevar helped lead the Colts to a 22-8 record, reaching the semifinals of the CCCAA Northern California Championship Tournament during the 2018-19 season. Kochevar's responsibilities as an assistant included academic oversight, player management, travel, film breakdown, scouting, player development, recruiting and social media coordination. He also served as a Head Junior Varsity and Assistant Varsity Coach at Junipero Serra High School and Westmoor High School.
"My family and I are so excited and grateful to join the Sacred Heart Cathedral community and boys basketball program. Competing in the WCAL as a player for Serra was the most exhilarating and memorable time of my athletic career. It's truly humbling to have the opportunity to coach in such a storied and respected league," Kochevar said. "The tradition that is Fightin' Irish basketball is strong, something I take very seriously and am eager to build on."
Kochevar played at Sonoma State University from 2004 to 2008. In 2005-06, the Seawolves won the CCAA Championship. He was a two-time captain and two-time All-CCAA selection. Kochevar finished his career with 1,079 points and ranks first in SSU career free-throw percentage (.833).
Kochevar was recently inducted into the Junipero Serra Hall of Fame. As the top three-point shooter in the WCAL his senior year, he was named WCAL Player of the Year in 2003, leading the Padres to the league championship.
"Coach Kochevar will provide opportunities for our young men to realize their potential both on and off the court," Athletic Director Phil Freed said. "With his experience as a former WCAL player and as a college coach, Coach Kochevar understands what it takes to compete in the WCAL. We look forward to him building on our past success of CCS, NorCal and State Championships in Boys Basketball and continuing the tradition and legacy of SHC basketball."
Kochevar holds a master's degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University and a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Sonoma State University.
