SHC Girls Basketball Provide a Thriller inside Chase Center

The Irish fell to the Saint Ignatius in the annual Bruce Mahoney game

Kanoe Palmer '24

The Sacred Heart Cathedral boys and girls basketball teams played their annual Bruce Mahoney rivalry Tuesday evening, and the setting was quite the scene.

Both teams took the court at the Chase Center in downtown San Francisco, home of the NBA's Golden State Warriors. The Irish girls started the evening with back and forth game that came down to the last few moments of the fourth quarter.

Despite a few turnovers, SHC took a 12-11 lead into the second quarter. The Irish hit their stride in the opening minutes of the third quarter with a couple 3-pointers, including a near NBA-range shot from Kaylen Alyssa Edora '25. Edora's bucket put the Sacred Heart Cathedral up 15-13. Saint Ignatius found its rhythm midway through the second half, taking a 18-17 lead and forcing SHC head coach Demetrius Jackson into a timeout.

The Wildcats kept nailing their shots from deep to end the half, but Kanoe Palmer '25 capped an Irish scoring run with a 3-pointer of her own to even the game at 27 apiece going into the locker room.

The Irish and the Wildcats went back and forth through much of the third quarter before SI hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 44-31. Saint Ignatius ended the quarter with a three-point play, while SHC could only claw a couple of points closer.

Everything changed to open the fourth with SHC down 50-36 and the Wildcats scorching from deep.

"We had make sure they didn't get any more open looks and keep playing our game," assistant coach Herman Pratt '13 said. "We came out in the second with the mindset its a fresh new game and we wanted to keep it that way."

The team talk at halftime sure helped the Irish right the ship in the third quarter.

The Irish ended their scoring drought to cut the SI lead to 50-41 and went on a 7-0 scoring run to be within seven. Edora hit a clutch shot to cut the Wildcat lead to just six with still three minutes to play. Saint Ignatius answered with a tough basket to go back up nine, which brought an end to the Irish's valiant comeback effort. SHC fell to SI 58-48 in just its second loss of the season after its second-half rally fell short.

It was an unforgettable night to remember for the Sacred Heart Cathedral players who played their first game in an NBA arena.

"The biggest memory I'll remember from this night is my family coming out to support me," Madison Eade '25 told reporters after the game. "I can't wait to see them later, I think I have 16 family members in the stands."
