The Central Coast Section announced the recipients of the 2023-24 Spring Season Scholastic Championship Team Awards last week and Sacred Heart Cathedral took the top prize in boys volleyball.
The CCS stated, "These awards, instituted by the CCS Board of Managers in 1985, recognize the top five Varsity teams, from each Central Coast Section sport, with the highest collective Grade Point Average of all teams competing in that sport during that season of competition. The student-athletes involved have achieved distinction in the classroom, and at the same time, have committed themselves to participation in interscholastic athletics. Their academic performance is yet another indication that such athletic participation enhances classroom activities."
The 2024 award marks the second consecutive CCS Academic Championship for Irish boys volleyball as the team had the highest GPA in 2023 as well.
In addition to their academic success, the boys volleyball team finished their regular season 28-7 (7-5 in WCAL) and are currently ranked by Maxpreps #7 in the Central Coast Section, #47 in California and #87 in the nation.
The team defeated Bellarmine 3-0 in the first round of the WCAL playoffs last night and travel to #1 seed St. Francis tonight in a semifinal match up. In addition, CCS seeding takes place on Saturday and the team looks forward to postseason play.
