The Sacred Heart Cathedral girls volleyball program hosted its 12th annual Serve It Up event on Saturday, October 5. The event took place during the CIF's Fall Sports Service Week and brought together the volleyball teams from Justin-Siena and Sacred Heart Cathedral. The student-athletes participated in seven different service projects.
One team wrote letters, made friendship bracelets, painted frames and assembled care packages for the 73 residents of the SF Veteran's Administration Hospital. Another group ran a volleyball clinic for students from De Marillac Academy. Two other groups did clean up in San Francisco frequently visited outdoor spaces, one group at Ocean Beach and the other with the Presidio Habitat Stewards program.
Two groups put their efforts towards creating gifts for cancer patients. SHC HR Director Laura Canaya and Kiana Paredes '23 led the group that made 94 heart shape pillows for California Pacific Medical Center breast cancer patients. The other group led by 8th grader Angelena Rael and her mom Nikki, made beanies for cancer patients who lose their hair during treatment.
The final group worked with SF Rec and Park to work to improve SF's Lafayette Park. SHC defensive specialist Leila Vasquez '25 spoke of her group's experience. "We really enjoyed our project. We did some weeding and clean up and then we planted some coffee plants which are native to California. The volunteer organizers were really nice and we had awesome views overlooking the Bay."
SHC Math Instructor Ms. Pam Gresh serves as the service coordinator for SHC Athletics and was happy with how the day went, "I love the idea of Lasallian schools coming together to do service and live out the mission of our schools."
A special spectator came to watch the junior varsity and freshman volleyball matches in the afternoon. Brother Joe Kirk, who lives at the Brothers residence on Ellis Street, is a 1974 graduate of Justin Siena and came to cheer for both schools, "Go Irish! Go Braves!"
Congratulations, volleyball program! Go Irish!!
