The SHC Flag Football team continued their highly impressive start in their inaugural season as a program, amassing a 4-2 record over the past several weeks with wins over Monte Vista, Dublin, Granada, and Andrew Hill high schools to build on their 3-0 start. The team's dominance through the early portion of the season is showcased in their point differential, which currently stands at +188 points and includes a 19-0 shutout of archrival Saint Ignatius. The Irish's two losses have come by a combined 9 points.
Coach Kristin Ray commented on the team's development, "I am super proud of what the girls have accomplished in this short amount of time. We have a group of dedicated players and coaches who are making a great impact on this growing sport of flag football. We are making waves that will ripple outwards forever."
The Fightin Irish flag football team stands out not just from their dominating and inspiring play, but also from the sheer number of playmakers across both sides of the ball. The Irish feature an exciting mix of upcoming and veteran talent, with playmakers on the offensive side of the ball including Freshman quarterback Nicole Abunda and wide receivers Reza Po and Aniyah Versosa. Freshman Kei'Yanii Dawson fulfills a crucial role as the team's center.
Defensively, the Irish has been able to stifle opponents through the strong performances of their linebackers, including Isabel Murray, Isabella Patnode, and Carolynn Alapati, and their secondary, which includes safety Kiana Moniz and freshman defensive back Kosisochi Anibuko.
Coach Ray added, "We are letting it be known that football is not just a boys sport anymore, girls are able to play and compete too."
The Irish's electric and paradigm-shifting season continues on Tuesday, where they travel to Analy. Game time is 7:00pm. You can catch the Irish flag football team's next home game Thursday, October 12, where they'll take on Saint Francis at Kezar Stadium at 6:30 pm.
