The girls volleyball teams defeated top-seeded Archbishop MItty at Mitty to win the WCAL Tournament title on November 6. The Irish needed four sets to dethrone the Monarchs, 25-22, 14-25, 25-21, 25-21.
Although they have advanced at least to the CCS Championship game and on to the State playoffs for the last 10 years, this is the first time the Fightin' Irish have won a WCAL Girls Volleyball title in school history.
Archbishop Mitty was ranked #1 in the nation by MaxPreps before the match. SHC has been ranked as highly as 8th in the nation, but was 13th in the most recent rankings. The teams were #1 and #2 in California, as well.
The teams had matching 30-2 records before the match, with Sacred Heart Cathedral's only two losses coming at the hands of the Monarchs, including a straight set match on the same court just two weeks earlier. The Irish now move to 31-2, the best mark in school history, while the Monarchs fall to 30-3.
The #2 Irish advanced to the WCAL Finals on the merits of a classic marathon match against #3 Valley Christian a night earlier. That match went a grueling five sets where the teams traded blows for four sets before the Irish pulled away in the fifth for a 15-7 win. The win served as payback for the Irish, as the Warriors were responsible for eliminating them in the CCS Division III finals and the NorCal Division III finals in 2013.
The Irish and Monarchs won't face each other again this year, and are both likely to earn top seeds in their respective CCS tournaments set to begin November 15. SHC will be placed in Division III and AMHS will be in Division II in the playoffs, based on enrollment size.
