2017 FALL SPORT VARSITY REVIEW
Boys and Girls Cross Country
The Cross Country program, in its 20th season under Coach Andy Chan, continued to produce outstanding runners and quality team performances this season, all the while growing the squad to a record 80 runners. Invitational victories came for the JV Boys and Girls at the Pacific Tiger Invitational and the Frosh/Soph boys at the Monterey Bay Invitational. At the Pacific Tiger Invitational, Sedge Greenlee ‘20 came away with the individual victory for the SHC boys, and Sabina House ‘20 continued to impress by winning the Varsity Girls race at the Serra/Crystal Springs Invitational and earning All-WCAL honors with a 4th place finish at the league finals. Both the Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls teams qualified for the Central Coast Section (CCS) Division 3 Championships. The Boys placed 4th and the Girls earned their 7th trip overall to the State Meet by placing 3rd. The girls finished 21st at the State Meet in Fresno.
The Irish had a very successful season under 1st year Head Coach Barry McLaughlin (12th season overall in the program). The varsity finished the season 6-4 overall which included league wins over St. Ignatius (in the Bruce-Mahoney game), Archbishop Mitty and Archbishop Riordan (in the Stanfel Cup game). For only the third time in school history, the Irish qualified for a CCS post-season berth in the Division 3 Open bracket. The Irish lost a tough 1st round game to Live Oak 28-21. Earning First Team All-League honors were Anthony Heard ‘19, Will Irons ’18, Zach Lealeo ’18, Areon Mitchell ’18, and Uriah Uila ’18. Second Team honors went to AJ Alston ’18, Evan Dere ’19, John Franceschini ’18, Sami Nazzal ’18 and LeVar Watkins ’19.
Despite a tough league campaign, the Irish golfers had a good season according to 1st year Head Coach Gregg Franceschi. He was pleased with the individual score improvements throughout the season. Qualifying for the CCS Individual Tournament was Shauna Eng ’18. She was also named 2nd Team All-League and Alexa Weaver ’20 was named Honorable Mention.
The Irish netters had many highlights during Coach Amy Klecker’s 9th season as head coach. The Irish had a great performance at the Santa Catalina Tournament where the team won 2 of 3 matches which included going undefeated in all doubles matches. At the WCAL Individual Tournament, 3 players advanced to the quarter-finals: Eleanor Gillis ’19 in singles and Julie Ira ’18 and Anamaria Chavarria ’18 in doubles. Ira and Chavarria were also named 2nd Team All-League and singles player Sophie Standen ’18 and doubles team Ella Scanga ’18 and Lauren McPartland ’18 were named Honorable Mention.
The Irish struggled early in the season with consistency but found their rhythm in the post-season. In Coach Margi Beima’s 14th season as head coach (19th overall in SHC), the Irish qualified for their 14th consecutive NorCal appearance (17th appearance overall). In the NorCal Tournament, the Irish defeated Campolindo, Buchanan of Clovis (in the remarkable 3-2 comeback) and Branson before losing in the Division 1 title match to Logan. Their trip to the nationally-recognized Torrey Pines Tournament in San Diego helped their rankings in the State (20th) and in the nation (140). Named to the All-League Team were Megan Lenn ‘ 20 (1st Team), Saupuni Mavaega ’18 (2nd Team), Ashley Chan ’20 and Alden Stanley ‘ 20 (Honorable Mention). Giana Silvestri ’18 was voted the recipient of the Kelly Gallagher Memorial Award by her teammates.
